Umpiring Guidelines

Umpires are an important part of netball, without them the game simply cannot happen. As an umpire remember that you control the game to ensure the players are playing in a safe environment and that the game is played fairly under the rules of netball.

Without YOU the game could not take place.

As a requirement of being a member of the Pine Rivers Netball Association, United Starz Netball Club have agreed to supply a suitably qualified Umpire for each team nominated.

United Starz Netball Club has a very strong tradition of supplying umpires of a very high calibre.

For 2024 United Starz is planning to mentor Umpires from the development and junior stages through to umpire higher grades in preparation for their National Badge and when ready be tested for their National Badge.

United Starz Umpires are required to:

  • Maintain the ‘Starz Spirit’ to the highest standard when undertaking Umpiring duties.

  • Treat all players fairly and with respect at all times.

  • Value the individual in sport.

  • Do not take personal knowledge of players onto the court.

  • Place the safety and welfare of the players above all else.

  • Umpires must be impartial and maintain integrity in their relationships with other umpires, players and coaches.

  • Be a positive role model in behaviour and personal appearance by maintaining the highest standards of personal conduct and projecting a favourable image of netball and umpiring at all times.

  • Show concern and caution towards ill and injured players. You should enforce the blood rule and apply procedures regarding ill or injured players according to the rulebook. Common sense must be applied in all cases.

  • Avoid situations which may lead to a conflict of interest.

  • Seek continual self-improvement through study, performance appraisal and regular updating of competencies.
