2020 Team Selection Process

We see a real value in selecting our teams based on skill level and see that the adoption of this system for the 2019 Winter Season was successful.  For 2020 though, we will be adding some additional steps to the process.  If you would like to discuss the process for 2020 team selections please reach out to Andrew Hamlyn for a chat.

PLEASE NOTE:  The following information is only relevant for Junior and Intermediate teams.

Modified and Divison teams will not be following this process.

2020 Player Development Sessions

Commencing in late January and held at our training courts, we will be holding two to three development days leading up to our trials.  The aim of these days is to assist players getting back on court after the long break.  Each player will be numbered and will carry this number though the entire selection process as the player's engagement, commitment and involvement will be measured across the entire process.  Attitude and the display of Starz Spirit will very definitely count.  We have listened to feedback from the 2019 process and welcome additional feedback on how well we are adapting and improving.  At all times we are striving to ensure all our members enjoy a competitive and challenging season of netball where they learn and improve while forming bonds that will outlive their time with us.

Session 1 ( 01 February 2020 )

There will be a strong focus on "safe" strength and fitness activities for the first session with some fun gameplay activities to help muscle memory and regular memory get attuned to netball movements and netball strategy.

Well done to everyone who came out in the heat.  A fantastic start to the 2020 Season.  We will continue to focus on Strength & Fitness throughout the year and will have regular dedicated sessions.

Session 2 ( 13 February 2020 )

After the first session we will be having a solid look at attacking (including shooting) and defending skills.  Every player on a netball team needs to know about playing both sides of the ball.  Having the letter 'A' on your bib does not exempt you from having the ability to quickly get your three feet with your hands over the ball.  Every player needs to know about space and how to drive to it, how to clear it, how to intentionally confuse it and how to defend it.  The original aim was to conduct this element as two seperate sessions on two seperate days but with public holidays and other time pressures we will compress this to one day.

We postponed this session due to wild weather but we will definitely attempt to hold this session before the beginning of the 2020 Winter Season.

Other Starz Activities

On these development days it is also intended that

  • You will be able to meet and engage your new committee,

  • You will be able to explore the opportunity to coach/manage a team,

  • You will be able to try on uniforms and buy what you need for the new season ahead and

  • You will even be able to buy a sausage on a piece of bread for a very good price.

2020 Open Trial  -  23 February 2020

Between our final development day (see above) and our closed trial day (see below), there will be an open trial day held at our training courts.  This day will be structured much like the closed day from 2019 and likewise, the closed day to come in 2020. This day will be the last chance for players to receive guidance and input prior to the final closed trial day.  Parents/carers will be welcome to attend but not interfere with the process. There will be a selection panel made of people external to United Starz at this event.

A full morning and everyone gave it all.  This session gave us a good view of some possible team combinations we could try out and push further at our upcoming closed trial.

2020 Closed Trial  -  01 March 2020

This day will be run practically identically to our 2019 closed trial.  It will be held on Sunday, March 1st 2019 at Genesis Christian College. The trial sessions will start at 9:00am and will finish at 1:00pm with Junior Players in one session and Intermediate Players in a seperate one.

The final chance for our Junior and Intermediate players to show off and get in a most suitable team for them in 2020.  Many of us had a bit of fun in the pool afterward but everyone had a full day of trialling.  Good Luck to everyone.

Other Activities

This year we also have access to the swimming pool after trials for players to have a much needed cool down and wind down after their gruelling trial.

As with previous years, this is the big day for team announcements.  The selections are announced, the teams gather and meet their coach, manager and each other.

We met and we all greeted our new teams for 2020.  The world then went a bit silly and now we wait to see if netball happens for this upcoming 2020 Winter season.  All our fingers are crossed.
